Upcycling Old Towels Into Sustainable Pet Grooming Cloths
Those frayed bath towels at the back of your closet still have a lot of life left in them. With a few quick cuts and folds, you can transform them into grooming cloths that are perfect for bath time, muddy paws, and everyday clean-ups—no disposables required.

Step 1: Choose the Right Towels
Look for towels that are:
Clean and odor-free (even if they’re stained or faded).
Made from cotton or other absorbent natural fibers.
A bit worn-in—older towels are often softer on sensitive skin and paws.
Skip anything with loose glitter, harsh chemical stains, or strong scents that might irritate your pet.
Step 2: Cut and Size Your Cloths
You don’t need sewing skills—just scissors.
For bath towels: cut into halves or quarters for big, fluffy grooming cloths.
For hand towels: cut in half for perfect paw- and face-sized wipes.
Round corners if you like, so they’re less likely to fray and catch.
Aim for a mix of sizes so you have a cloth for every job: big ones for post-bath, small ones for quick wipe-downs.
Step 3: Put Them to Work in Your Grooming Routine
Use your new cloths for:
Drying after baths or rainy walks.
Wiping muddy paws at the door.
Gently cleaning around eyes, ears (outer only), and mouths with warm water.
Lining grooming surfaces so your pet has a comfy, non-slip spot.
Keep a small stack by the door and another near your grooming supplies so they’re always handy.
Step 4: Wash and Reuse (Again and Again)
To keep your grooming cloths fresh and pet-safe:
Wash in warm water with fragrance-free, dye-free detergent.
Skip fabric softeners and heavy scented boosters that can irritate skin.
Air-dry when possible to extend the life of the fabric.
When a cloth gets too worn for grooming, downgrade it to a cleaning rag for floors or kennels—then retire it completely when it’s done.
Upcycling towels into grooming cloths is a small, low-effort change that reduces waste, saves money, and keeps your pet care routine a little bit greener. All it takes is one old towel and a pair of scissors to get started.
